Nursing informatics certification, the NI-BC exam

Informatics Nursing Certification (NI-BC)

Facts checked against nursingworld.org, codeofethics.ana.org and 2 more sites · Last checked Nov 6, 2026 · Not affiliated with ANCC, ANA, AONL, NLN or AACN.

The NI-BC is the board certification ANCC awards to registered nurses working in informatics: analysts, build and optimization nurses, clinical informatics specialists. A bachelor's in nursing, 2 years as an RN, 30 hours of informatics CE and logged informatics hours qualify you; a master's is one route, not a requirement.

Which informatics credential is this?

A search for nursing informatics certification returns three different things. Only one of them is a nursing board certification.

  • The ANCC board certification. For registered nurses only, and it carries the NI-BC letters after your name. Two accreditors, ABSNC and NCCA, recognize it, and the entry point is a nursing bachelor's plus logged informatics hours.
  • AMIA's AHIC and HIMSS's CPHIMS. Informatics credentials from other organizations, open beyond nursing. Neither is a nursing specialty certification, and neither replaces this one where an employer asks for ANCC board certification.
  • A graduate certificate or MSN in nursing informatics. An academic program, not a credential. It can lead to this exam: one eligibility route counts a graduate informatics nursing program with a supervised practicum (how each route works).

About the old name: some prep sites still call it RN-BC. That label is out of date; the letters ANCC awards today are NI-BC.

Three domains on four pages

The outline in force dates from May 3, 2023. With 35% of the scored items in the system design lifecycle, we split that domain at the point where build ends and testing begins:

Box 1The seat the questions put you in

Our questions are written from the informatics nurse's chair, the role the outline describes: a requirements session, a test script, a go-live command center, an interface that drops results. Budgets, staffing grids and organizational strategy belong to the nurse executive exams, NE-BC and NEA-BC.

From application to five years certified

  1. Check the hours

Count informatics practice and continuing education against the three routes before you pay anything.

  2. Apply and pay

Online, year-round. Non-members paid $395 in November 2026; ANA or ANIA members pay less (cost).

  3. Book a seat

Once approved, you schedule with Prometric inside a 120-day window.

  4. Test day

150 questions in 3 hours. 25 are unscored pretest items, and nothing marks which ones.

  5. Keep it

The credential lasts 5 years. Renewal rules live on ANCC certification renewal.

5 questions drawn from all three domains

Question 1 of 5 · Data Management and Healthcare Technology · 29%

To display monthly catheter-associated urinary tract infection rates over two years and distinguish special-cause from common-cause variation, the best tool is a:

  1. A histogram shows how values are distributed at one point in the analysis and loses the month-by-month sequence needed to judge variation over time.
  2. A control chart plots data over time with a center line and statistically calculated control limits, so points beyond the limits or nonrandom patterns signal special-cause variation.
  3. A Pareto chart ranks categories, such as infection causes, by frequency to find the vital few; it has no time axis.
  4. A run chart shows a trend over time around a median, but without control limits it cannot formally separate special-cause from common-cause variation; mixing up the two charts is a frequent error.
Question 2 of 5 · Foundations of Practice · 36%

A misdirected fax exposes the unsecured PHI of 12 patients, and the risk assessment cannot show a low probability of compromise. Besides notifying the patients, the hospital must:

  1. Media notice and HHS notice within 60 days apply when 500 or more residents of a state or jurisdiction are affected; using the large-breach rule for 12 patients is the common mix-up.
  2. A small breach still has to go to HHS; being under 500 only changes the timing to an annual report, not the duty to report.
  3. The Breach Notification Rule sets no 24-hour deadline; that figure is borrowed from other incident-reporting rules.
  4. Breaches affecting fewer than 500 people are logged and reported to HHS no later than 60 days after the end of the calendar year, in addition to notifying each affected individual.
Question 3 of 5 · Foundations of Practice · 36%

Under the HIPAA Privacy Rule, which use of a patient's protected health information requires the patient's written authorization?

  1. Sharing results with another provider caring for the patient is a treatment disclosure, permitted without authorization.
  2. Giving PHI to an employer for employment decisions falls outside treatment, payment, and health care operations, so it needs the patient's written authorization.
  3. Billing a health plan is a payment use, which the Privacy Rule permits without written authorization.
  4. Internal quality review is a health care operations use; it is permitted without authorization, though the minimum necessary standard still applies.
Question 4 of 5 · System Design Lifecycle: testing, implementation and support

Testing confirms that a medication order verified in the pharmacy system crosses the interface and appears correctly on the patient's eMAR. This is an example of:

  1. Unit testing examines one component, such as a single field or rule, in isolation before it is connected to anything else.
  2. User acceptance testing is end users confirming the system fits their workflow before sign-off; it is not a check that an order crosses an interface correctly.
  3. Regression testing reruns earlier tests after a change to confirm that functions that used to work still work; nothing in the stem describes a change being rechecked.
  4. Integration testing checks that data pass correctly between separately built modules or systems, here the pharmacy application, the interface, and the eMAR.
Question 5 of 5 · System Design Lifecycle: planning, analysis and build

A VTE prophylaxis alert tells prescribers that a patient lacks prophylaxis, but they must close it and search for the order separately. The most effective redesign is to:

  1. Putting the recommended VTE order inside the alert makes the right action the easiest action and removes the separate search that causes prescribers to dismiss it.
  2. A hard stop blocks work even when prophylaxis is contraindicated or already addressed, which breeds workarounds; it adds force without fixing the missing order path.
  3. A guideline link adds reading, not action; it supplies information the prescriber already has and leaves the extra order search in place.
  4. Repeating the same unactionable alert more often is a classic driver of alert fatigue and makes overrides more likely, not less.

Informatics certification, short answers

Do informatics nurses need a master's to sit for it?

No. The degree requirement is a bachelor's or higher in nursing. Graduate coursework or a graduate program is one of three ways to meet the hours requirement, not a gate. The routes side by side: eligibility.

Is there a remote-proctored option?

Not at the moment. The current ANCC handbook describes test-center delivery only, so plan for a Prometric center.

How many first-time candidates pass?

ANCC put the 2025 first-time pass rate at 65%, under the NEA-BC's 73% that year. The two exams draw different candidates, so read the gap with care.

My job title says analyst, not nurse. Do my hours count?

ANCC asks for hours of practice in informatics nursing and does not list job titles, so describe the work itself when you apply. How the hour routes are counted: eligibility.
