NLN nurse educator competencies, all eight

Facts checked against nln.org · Last checked Nov 6, 2026 · Not affiliated with ANCC, ANA, AONL, NLN or AACN.

The eight NLN core competencies of academic nurse educators are not background reading for this exam: they are its blueprint. Each competency is one content area of the 2023 blueprint, and the same eight headings organize renewal by credit.

Where the competencies come from

NLN's Certification Governance Committee first published the Scope of Practice for Academic Nurse Educators, with its core competencies, in 2005, and revised it in 2012, 2020 and 2025 (candidate handbook, p. 3). The handbook adds a caveat worth keeping: how far one educator uses each competency depends on the institution's mission, academic rank and preparation, and the type of program.

The standard commentary is Halstead's NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators: A Decade of Influence (2019), which the handbook lists among its resources.

The eight, with their place on the exam

  1. Facilitate Learning, 47 items: a classroom, lab and clinical climate in which learners reach cognitive, affective and psychomotor outcomes. Area page.
  2. Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization, 18 items: helping learners grow into the nurse role and its values. Area page.
  3. Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies, 18 items: assessing learning in all three domains and acting on the data. Area page.
  4. Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes, 13 items: outcomes, course design, program evaluation. Area page.
  5. Function as a Change Agent and Leader, 9 items: shaping the program and nursing education. Academic leadership.
  6. Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Academic Nurse Educator Role, 9 items: the educator's own development. CQI and scholarship.
  7. Engage in Scholarship, 7 items: inquiry, and making it public. CQI and scholarship.
  8. Function within the Organizational Environment and the Academic Community, 9 items: governance, civility, the institution. Academic leadership.

All counts refer to the 130 scored items; the detailed blueprint in the handbook adds the task statements under each competency and a list of 63 knowledge statements.

Two names that differ between NLN documents

The 2022 renewal credit guide and 2025 sample renewal form still use the older titles: competency 8 is “Function within the Educational Environment”, and competency 6 ends “in the Nurse Educator Role” in the guide. The 2023 blueprint uses the longer titles listed above. They are the same competencies; when you file renewal credits, match the activity to the competency number.

Renewal credits follow the competencies

Renewal by credit asks you to show continuing competence through activities linked to these eight. Each activity is entered once, under one competency, and cannot be split across several (renewal page). The credit guide gives the conversions, for example one continuing education contact hour for one renewal credit and four credits for an accreditation site visit (credit guide).

Dates, the exam route and the fee are under renewal in the exam facts.

Not every “NLN competencies” list is this one

The same body publishes other competency sets, including those behind its academic clinical educator credential (the CNEcl). Nurse leader competencies come from a different body, AONL, and are on nurse leader competencies. This page covers only the eight for academic nurse educators.

The content areas, page by page

The NLN competencies, quick answers

Are the NLN competencies the same as the exam's content areas?

Yes, one to one: the 2023 blueprint uses the eight competencies as its eight areas, with a question count for each.

Must I document all eight competencies to renew by credit?

Each activity must be matched to one competency. The renewal pages we checked in November 2026 set no quota per competency; the credit guide lists which activities fit where.

Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
