Magnet requirements for nurse leaders, in plain terms

"Magnet certification" is a designation an organization earns, not a credential a nurse holds. Its eligibility criteria do reach individual leaders, though, and the rule people expect (that the CNO or managers must be board certified) is not among them. What Magnet sets for leaders is a degree.

A designation for organizations

The Magnet Recognition Program designates health care organizations, not people. An applicant has to include every setting where its CNO is responsible for nursing practice, has one CNO under a single governing authority, and that CNO sits on the organization's highest decision-making and strategic planning body. Those are the organization eligibility criteria; the parts below are the ones that concern individual leaders.

The CNO's degree

The CNO must hold at least a master's degree at the time of application. If that master's is not in nursing, the baccalaureate or the doctorate must be. The requirement has to hold through application, review and the whole designation period, and it applies to interim CNOs as well.

Nurse managers and nurse leaders

  • Nurse managers: 100% must have a degree in nursing, baccalaureate or graduate. Magnet's definition is an RN with 24/7 accountability for the RNs and other providers of an inpatient or outpatient area.
  • Nurse leaders: 100% must hold a bachelor's or higher degree in nursing. "Nurse leader" is not a job title here and excludes the CNO; it covers RNs who report directly or indirectly to the CNO and lead others or broadly influence clinical practice. The top educator responsible for other educators counts, and the criteria give examples such as directors of quality or of nursing informatics.

The CNO attests to these on the application, and documentation includes a table of each manager and leader with their highest nursing degree.

Where certification does count

No Magnet criterion requires a CNO, director or manager to hold a leadership credential such as NE-BC, NEA-BC or CNML. Certification enters at the level of the organization: applicants show structures and processes that support nurses in becoming certified, and they report certification among their nurses.

One change matters for those figures. Since January 1, 2024, only nursing and health care-related professional board certifications are counted; the change was announced in June 2021 (Journal of Nursing Administration, 2024;54(1):1–2). A leader's credential therefore helps the organization's count, without being a condition of the leader's job.

Accreditation of a certification program is a separate question from Magnet. The two Prometric exams name ABSNC and NCCA on their pages, and AONL's CNML FAQ names the same two accreditors for its programs. For the credentials themselves: nurse executive certification compared.

Leadership credentials and Magnet

Magnet and nurse leaders

Does a Magnet hospital require nurse managers to be certified?

No. Magnet requires every nurse manager to hold a nursing degree, baccalaureate or higher; board certification is encouraged at the organization level, not required of managers.

What degree does a Magnet CNO need?

At least a master's at the time of application. If the master's is in another field, the bachelor's or doctorate must be in nursing, and interim CNOs are held to the same rule.

Is "Magnet certification" something a nurse can earn?

No. Magnet designates organizations. Nurses earn board certifications, which an organization counts among its nurses.
