Nurse educator certification, faculty or hospital

Facts checked against nln.org, nursingworld.org and codeofethics.ana.org · Last checked Nov 6, 2026 · Not affiliated with ANCC, ANA, AONL, NLN or AACN.

Nurse educators work in two different places, and each has its own credential. Faculty in nursing programs certify with the National League for Nursing, which runs three exams: one for experienced faculty, one for clinical instructors and one for new faculty. Educators inside hospitals and health systems certify in nursing professional development with the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

A certificate program is not certification

Many results for "nurse educator certification" are graduate certificates from universities: coursework, a transcript, no board exam. They can matter, because a post-master's certificate in nursing education is one of the routes into the faculty exams. The credentials compared here are different: each is a board exam with its own eligibility and renewal.

Where you teach decides

  • Faculty in a nursing program (didactic courses, curriculum, testing, program evaluation): the CNE. Its outline is built on the NLN nurse educator competencies.
  • Clinical instructors who teach students on units or in simulation: CNEcl. A BSN with two years of academic clinical teaching in the last five, plus three years of nursing practice, meets the rule.
  • New faculty: CNEn, for educators in their first three years of academic teaching. It lasts three years and is not renewed; the plan is to move on to the full exam.
  • Hospital and health-system educators (orientation, competency programs, continuing education for staff): NPD-BC, which counts 2,000 hours of nursing professional development practice.

The two sides overlap in skills, but the exams test different jobs. Academic test writing and item analysis belong to the faculty outline; needs assessment, onboarding and measuring the effect of staff education belong to the NPD outline.

Three faculty exams, in order

The three faculty exams share a format: 150 questions, 130 of them scored, 3 h, and three answer options rather than four. Prep banks written with four options do not match that format. A new faculty member with an education-focused graduate degree can sit the full CNE at once; the novice exam is the option for the first three years before taking it. The clinical exam is the route for instructors whose teaching is mainly clinical. Each has its own fee, shown in the table.

Is there an ANCC nurse educator certification?

Not for academic faculty. Of the 17 credentials in the American Nurses Credentialing Center catalog (checked November 6, 2026), the only one for educators is NPD-BC, written for educators inside health care organizations. A nursing instructor at a college or university would look to the NLN exams instead. Everything that exam shares with its sister exams (Prometric, scaled score, five-year renewal) is on the page about the center's certifications.

Reading the pass rates

The two bodies count differently. NLN publishes the share of all registrations that passed in a year, without separating first-time candidates; the NPD figure is for first-time candidates only. The table shows both as published, so a higher NLN figure does not mean an easier exam.

Choosing an educator credential

Which certification is for nursing instructors at a college?

The faculty exams of the National League for Nursing: the full CNE for experienced faculty, CNEcl for clinical instructors and CNEn for the first three years.

Is NPD-BC accepted for teaching in a nursing school?

It certifies a different role, professional development inside health care organizations. Schools set their own hiring rules, but the credential written for academic teaching is NLN's.

Do I need a master's degree to certify as a nurse educator?

For the full faculty exam, yes: a master's or doctorate in nursing, and the novice exam also expects graduate-level education preparation. CNEcl accepts a BSN with clinical teaching experience, and NPD-BC a BSN with NPD practice hours.

Are the NLN exams available online?

Yes: each can be taken at a Meazure Learning test center or with live online proctoring. For the full faculty exam, testing accommodations are available only at a test center.

Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
