Hospital educator, not faculty
ANCC describes the exam as a test of entry-level knowledge for registered nurses in the nursing professional development (NPD) specialty: the people who run unit in-services, onboarding, competency validation and contact-hour programs. The job sits in a hospital or health system, not in a school of nursing.
Teaching in a nursing program instead? The academic counterpart is the NLN's CNE, with a graduate-degree requirement and a different question format (multiple choice, 3 options).
ANPD or ANCC? The Association for Nursing Professional Development writes the specialty's Scope and Standards and sells review courses. The credential itself comes from ANCC, so a search for "ANPD certification" ends at this exam.
NPDA-BC is a different credential: a portfolio credential from another organization, not this ANCC exam.
Where the 125 scored items come from
The Feb 26, 2025 outline sorts the scored items into six domains. Five pages here cover them; the two smallest share one:
The outline now in force grew out of ANCC's 2024 study of NPD practice and renamed or added several topics; the study guide lists what came in and what went out. Question banks that still call the credential RN-BC predate the change. We checked this page against the ANCC outline and handbook on Nov 6, 2026; domain weights are on exam facts.
Application to result, step by step
Eligibility
In brief: a nursing bachelor's, RN experience, NPD practice hours and NPD continuing education. Thresholds and how ANCC audits them: requirements.
Application
Applications are open year-round. Approval opens a 120-day window for booking a seat and testing.
Test day
Allow 3 hours at the Prometric test center. Trial items for future forms sit unmarked among the scored ones.
Result
Pass or fail appears on Prometric's score portal once you finish. A failing report grades your domains high, medium or low: a map for the second attempt.
If you fall short
A retest comes after a waiting period, within a yearly cap, and needs a new application each time (the rule, fees).
Question 1 of 5 · Evidence-based Practice and Research · 6%
An NPD practitioner plans to measure moral injury by first interviewing staff to identify themes and then building a survey from those themes. Which research design is this?
An embedded design within a trial nests a secondary strand inside a larger study, such as interviews within an RCT, which is not what is planned here.
Convergent parallel design collects qualitative and quantitative data at the same time and compares them, with no phase building on the other.
Exploratory sequential design starts with qualitative interviews to explore a concept and then builds a quantitative instrument from the themes, exactly this plan.
Explanatory sequential design runs the other way, collecting quantitative data first and then using qualitative data to explain the results.
Question 2 of 5 · Educational Process Standards · 26%
The NPD practitioner schedules heart failure education for medical-surgical nurses the week before their unit begins admitting cardiac patients. Which andragogy assumption does this timing apply?
Readiness to learn says adults become ready to learn what a new life or role task demands, so teaching just before the unit admits cardiac patients uses that readiness.
The role of experience refers to learners' prior experience as a resource for learning, not to the timing of the session.
Need to know means adults want to understand why they must learn something; it concerns explaining the purpose, not timing the class to a new demand.
Self-concept is the adult's need to be self-directing, which scheduling a class does not address.
Question 3 of 5 · Ethical, Legal, and Regulatory Standards · 15%
The nursing professional development (NPD) practitioner writes an original case study and saves it without a copyright notice. Copyright protection for this work begins when it is:
Publication or distribution is not a trigger; unpublished teaching materials are protected just like published ones, and this choice mixes up copyright with public release.
Copyright attaches automatically the moment an original work is fixed in a tangible form, such as a saved file or a printout, so the unsaved-notice case study is already protected.
A copyright notice has not been required for U.S. works since 1989, so waiting for the notice repeats a rule that no longer exists.
Registration with the U.S. Copyright Office is optional; it matters for suing over infringement, not for creating the right, so treating it as the start point confuses enforcement with ownership.
Question 4 of 5 · Leadership · 27%
The NPD practitioner reviews a case study in which the only patient identified by ethnicity is the one who does not follow the treatment plan. Which revision is most appropriate?
Changing the patient to a different ethnicity just moves the stereotype to another group.
Keeping it because it reflects adherence data misapplies population statistics to one portrayed patient and teaches learners to expect the behavior from the group.
Adding non-adherent patients of other ethnicities keeps ethnicity attached to nonadherence; spreading the label around does not remove the pattern.
Omitting ethnicity unless clinically relevant stops the case from linking a demographic trait to nonadherence, which is how stereotypes are taught by accident.
Question 5 of 5 · Technology · 15%
An emergency department wants to test both staff response and the unit's actual workflow for recognizing sepsis. Which simulation modality is most appropriate?
In situ simulation on the unit uses the real team, equipment, and workflow, so it tests both staff response and system problems such as missing supplies.
A virtual reality sepsis scenario trains individual recognition but cannot reveal problems in the department's real processes.
High-fidelity simulation in the lab can test team response but not the unit's actual workflow and environment.
Task trainer practice sessions isolate single psychomotor skills and do not test recognition or workflow.
Nursing professional development, the specialty of educating and developing nurses inside a health care organization. The letters NPD-BC after a name mean ANCC board certification in that specialty.
How long does the credential last?
A cycle runs 5 years. Renewal follows ANCC's standard rules, shared with NE-BC, NEA-BC and NI-BC on this site; they are on ANCC certification renewal.
Do I need a master's degree to sit for it?
No. ANCC sets the bar at a nursing bachelor's. A graduate degree matters for a different label: ANPD calls a certified NPD practitioner with a graduate degree an NPD specialist (practitioner vs specialist).
What is the NPD-BC first-time pass rate?
In 2025, 72% of first-time candidates passed, according to ANCC's yearly certification data. Scoring is explained on exam facts.
Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
