Two routes to eligibility
The exact wording is in the table above. In practice there are two routes.
- Route A, an education emphasis: your master's or doctorate in nursing focused on nursing education, or you added a post-master's certificate in nursing education or graduate courses in education. No teaching job is required.
- Route B, teaching experience: a graduate nursing degree in another role, plus recent employment in an academic nursing program.
Both routes need the RN license to be unencumbered in your country of residence, and the criteria must be met on the day you apply (eligibility page). Not there yet? The degree path is on how to become a nurse educator.
Applying and booking a seat
- Create an account in the Certification Portal and complete the application.
- Pay the fee; the member price needs your membership ID (fees and membership).
- After approval, a 90-day clock starts for booking and taking the exam.
- Can't test in time? One 90-day extension is allowed, for $75, if you ask at least 7 business days before the window ends.
- Choose live online proctoring or a Meazure Learning test center, open Monday to Saturday. Accommodations are offered only at a test center.
- A date change costs $50 and needs 2 business days' notice.
What is on today's form
A form holds 150 questions. Of those, 130 count; the other 20 are unmarked pretest items. Every question has three answer options, and you have 3 hours with no calculator. Most scored questions test application or analysis rather than recall (handbook, detailed blueprint).
What changed: the 2023 blueprint rebuilt the exam around the eight educator competencies, added social determinants of learning, clinical judgment and belonging, and moved admission and progression policy into curriculum. The current handbook prints three-option questions. Prep material that still shows four options, or the area names of the pre-2023 blueprint, predates the current form.
Cut score and results
A modified Angoff study sets the cut score. How many right answers it takes can vary by form, and the figure is not published. In such a study, experienced educators judge each item for the share of borderline candidates likely to get it right, and the cut comes from those judgments, so a tougher form calls for fewer right answers.
You learn pass or fail on screen before leaving the session. Scores by content area appear on the report as a guide for a retake, not as part of the decision. In 2025, 74% of registrations passed; first-time candidates are not reported separately.
The “100 questions, 85 to pass” myth
One prep site still describes the exam as 100 questions with a passing score of 85. Neither number appears in the current candidate handbook: the form is 150 questions, and the count of right answers needed is not printed.
Retake rules and forfeits
You can retest once per quarter, no more than four times a year; every attempt means a fresh application and the full fee. A withdrawal request has to arrive at least 7 days before the 90-day window ends; a no-show, arriving late or letting the window lapse forfeits the fee (handbook).
Renewing by credit or by exam
The credential runs 5 years. You renew either by documenting renewal credits against the eight competencies, due October 1 of the final year, or by retaking the exam by December 31. The renewal fee is $475 for non-members and lower for members; the required credit range is in the table above.
Each renewal activity counts under one competency only (renewal page); the map is on NLN core competencies. ANCC's contact-hour categories are a different system, covered on ANCC certification renewal.

Applying for the CNE, quick answers
Can I renew the CNE without retaking the exam?
Yes. Renewal by credit is the alternative. It is due on October 1 of the final year, three months before the exam route closes.
Is there a fixed number of correct answers needed to pass the CNE?
No. The number of correct answers needed can vary by form, and it is not published.
Does an online CNE appointment differ from a test center?
Same exam either way, but testing accommodations require a test center.

Each figure is reread against its document on a fixed cycle, and the date beside a source is its latest pass. Where a number here and the document part ways, the document wins (how corrections happen).
